Dog Pregnancy Calculator

This dog pregnancy calculator estimates your dog's due date from the mating date. It also shows a wider whelping window and common timing for ultrasound and X-ray checks.

How this calculator works

How long are dogs pregnant?

Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days, counted from the breeding date. That is the number most dog due date tools use. It is a good planning estimate, but it is not an exact promise.

The true date can shift because mating date and conception date may not be the same. Sperm can live for several days, and ovulation timing can vary. That is why this calculator gives both an estimated due date and a wider whelping window.

Use the result to plan supplies, vet checks, and a quiet whelping space. Call your vet for any pregnancy concern, especially if your dog is very young, older, small, large, or has had trouble giving birth before.

How is a dog’s due date calculated?

The basic formula is:

Estimated due date = mating date + 63 days

If mating happened on January 1, the estimated due date is March 5. The calculator also shows a likely whelping window from 58 to 68 days after the first known mating date.

If you enter a last mating date, the calculator widens the due date range. That is helpful when mating happened over more than one day. It uses 62 days from the first mating date and 64 days from the last mating date for the main estimate.

The vet check dates are also counted from the mating date. Ultrasound timing is shown around days 25 to 35. X-ray timing is shown after day 45, when fetal skeletons are usually easier to see.

How to use this dog pregnancy calculator

  1. Enter the first known mating, tie, or insemination date.
  2. If mating happened over several days, enter the last mating date too.
  3. Read the estimated due date and wider whelping window.
  4. Use the vet check dates to plan when to call your clinic.

If you do not know the mating date, this calculator cannot give a reliable answer. Your vet may use exam findings, ultrasound, X-ray timing, or hormone history to estimate where your dog is in pregnancy.

Example: finding a dog due date

Say your dog mated on January 1, 2026. You enter that as the first mating date and leave the last mating date blank.

The calculator uses:

January 1, 2026 + 63 days = March 5, 2026

It also shows a whelping window from February 28 to March 10. That wider range helps you prepare without treating March 5 as the only possible day.

The ultrasound window starts around January 26. The X-ray timing starts after February 15. Your vet may suggest different timing based on your dog’s health, breed, and history.

Signs your dog is close to giving birth

As delivery gets close, your dog may nest, pant, refuse food, or become more restless. Some dogs want privacy. Others want to stay close to their owner.

A drop in body temperature can happen before labor, but it is not perfect. Ask your vet how and when to take a temperature if you plan to use that sign.

Call your vet if you see green discharge before the first puppy, strong contractions for a long time with no puppy, heavy bleeding, weakness, or a long gap between puppies. These can be emergency signs.

How to prepare for your dog’s delivery

Set up a clean, quiet whelping area before the due date window starts. Keep towels, your vet’s phone number, and an emergency clinic number nearby.

Talk with your vet before labor starts. Some breeds are more likely to need help during delivery. Small dogs, brachycephalic dogs, and dogs with past whelping problems need extra planning.

If you are tracking breeding cycles, the Dog Heat Cycle Calculator can help with record keeping before pregnancy. After the litter arrives, the Puppy Weight Calculator can help with growth planning. You can also return to all Pets.

Frequently asked questions

How long are dogs pregnant?

Dogs are usually pregnant for about 63 days, or about nine weeks. A normal due date can shift because the breeding date may not match the conception date. Your vet can give better timing if ovulation was tracked.

Can a dog give birth before 63 days?

Yes. Some dogs whelp a few days before the 63 day mark. Call your vet right away if labor starts very early, if your dog seems weak or in pain, or if you see strong contractions without a puppy.

When can a vet confirm dog pregnancy?

A vet may confirm pregnancy by ultrasound around 21 to 30 days after breeding. Relaxin blood tests are often useful after about 26 days. X-rays later in pregnancy can help estimate litter size.

Does breed size change a dog's due date?

Breed size can affect litter size and delivery risk, but the basic due date estimate is still close to 63 days. Very small, large, or high-risk breeds should have vet guidance before and during pregnancy.
